Frequently Asked Questions

What is the life expectancy on my HVAC equipment?

Most systems last 10 to 20 years, but as they age, efficiency decreases. Consider replacing older systems with newer, more energy-efficient equipment, especially if it’s 10+ years old.

Can I replace the outdoor unit on an older system to save money?

This is not recommended as it lowers efficiency by up to 15% and may lead to premature system failure. Always replace the indoor cooling coil along with the outdoor unit.

Will a larger system perform better?

Oversized air conditioners cool the home faster but use more energy and fail to adequately remove humidity. Short run cycles cause wear and tear and can lead to mold and mildew problems. Similarly, oversized furnaces use more fuel and create greater temperature swings. It’s best to have properly sized systems for optimal performance.

Why should I purchase a service agreement?

A service agreement helps avoid unexpected expenses from breakdowns. While it can’t cover everything, it provides broad protection and helps minimize costs.

Should I buy ENERGY STAR-labeled equipment?

Heating and cooling make up a significant portion of energy use in homes. ENERGY STAR labeled equipment, recommended by the EPA, can save up to 20% annually on energy costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ensure proper sizing, installation, and maintenance.

What factors contribute to a high water bill?

In addition to leaking faucets and pipes, most leaks occur in the toilet tank due to worn parts or misalignment in the flushing mechanism. Detecting and stopping these leaks is crucial to prevent increased monthly water bills.
